What difference can the power of one person make? I say it can move mountains and make all the difference in the world. Just paying attention to who is around you and observing, life will present you with many opportunities to serve others. It doesn’t have to be monumental, because even the smallest act of kindness can have far reaching effects.
I once read an article where they studied the Serotonin levels of people after they performed an act of kindness and the givers level was raised just as much as the receivers.
My friend just recently went to the store on Valentine’s Day and as he stood in line, he noticed an older man in front of him. He looked like he hadn’t shaved in a while and was bundled up from the cold.
He was trying to purchase a single rose and was short a single dime. He told the young clerk he would need to go out to his car to look for a dime. My friend had compassion and gave him the dime.
Was giving him the dime a big sacrifice for my friend? Probably not, but that’s not the point. The point is, that he recognized someone else’s struggle because he had once struggled himself. Perhaps, that is why we go through rough times. Our struggles may enable us to have compassion for others.
Maybe that older man didn’t have any money and was bringing that rose to a dying wife or a sick mother. I will never know, but what I do know, is that we hold the power to do magnificent things.
