Why do we cry? Is it any less manly for a guy to cry? Why would it be? Were we not created to feel emotion on many levels? It is one thing that differentiates us from other species. Crying has been proven to relieve stress, reduce certain hormones and chemical levels in the body which helps return us to a calm state.
Some people see crying as a sign of weakness but in certain situations, I feel it is anything but that. Look at what Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 says:
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.
A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and time to uproot
A time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
A time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
A time to tear and time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
A time to love and a time to hate,
A time to war and a time for peace
It also goes on to say that God has set eternity in the hearts of men…
Maybe this is why we sometimes feel that raw loneliness, a longing to be known and loved. We each have this hole in our heart that is longing for eternity and the love that it would encompass. We all long to be loved by someone else whether we want to admit it or not, I believe it is hard wired in each of us.
Life can be taken from us in an instant, so laugh when you are happy. Cry happy tears, or cry sad tears. They are liberating, and they cleanse our soul! Dance like no one is watching and tell someone you love them even if you don’t think it will be said back to you. It is good to be authentic and there can be no regrets in doing that.
